#BuckFiftyADay: Selling Cars
A year ago I was trying to sell cars. Sad as it sounds, the only call-backs I was getting when applying for jobs on craigslist were from car dealerships. So, finally, one day I took the job from the dealership that offered "training." I spent a week memorizing a script. The dealership was transitioning into being a "one price" shop. For those who don't know about this stuff, "one price' dealerships put the price of the car on a sticker on the windshield. No negotiation. No haggling. I thought this was perfect for me. I'd sell cars simply by being an honest, nice guy, the kind of salesman from whom I'd want to buy a car. I memorized the script and went to work. About two weeks in, we were getting slaughtered by dealerships that negotiated. We quickly reverted and I was a down-and-dirty car salesman. I lasted two months.
